When the world first heard Chris Martin’s fragile, soaring vocals on their first hit single ‘Yellow’, it was mesmerized. Melancholy, self-deprecating and intense, Martin, the lead singer of internationally renowned band Coldplay, isn’t exactly your typical rock star. Despite being the reclusive pin up boy for the anti-rock star attitude, it is this very quality that has in part ensured Coldplay’s success. With their fifth album rumoured to be due in October this year, the world is waiting to see where the group will take things next.
One thing is for certain - Chris Martin’s soaring vocals will send shivers down your spine as he once again turns the everyday into something simultaneously grand and fragile. Some things never change.

Born in Texas 1936, Roy Orbison is known for his intensely dark ballads as well lighter rockabilly hits. His music career was at its’ peak between 1959 and 1965, when he was undoubtedly the most influential musician in rock. At a time when his contemporaries were shaking their hips, tapping away in blue suede shoes or burning up the piano, Roy Orbison provided a quiet contrast. He was famously still on stage, entirely without gestures or conventional crowd pleasers. He would, instead, hide behind his trademark dark glasses and simply sing.

According to the distinguished pages of the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a Diva is “a usually glamorous and successful female performer or personality: a popular female singer”. No one person embodies this definition more fully than R&B superstar Beyoncé. Since finding fame in the late 1990s as the lead singer of girl group Destiny’s Child she has gone on to fame and fortune, becoming one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Beyond music, Beyoncé is a philanthropist, actress, fashion designer and a brand ambassador. In her career so far, she has accumulated a total of 16 Grammy Awards. The Recording Industry Association of America listed her as the top certified artist of the 2000s. To fully comprehend her levels of superstardom you need look no further than her name – Beyoncé. One word, no last name needed. This is a level of recognition that puts her in a tiny but prestigious circle of stars that include the likes of Bono, Madonna and Sting.

Heralded as the Saviours of rock’n’roll after the release of their debut album Is This It in 2001, the Strokes have since been burdened with heavy expectations from both critics and fans. Is This It was an unfaultable album in both content and concept. It injected some much needed gritty 70s- cool into an industry that had become increasingly fluffed and folded by synth-sounds and pop-princesses. The arrangements were tight and lean, packed with catchy hooks, grungy chords and frenetic drumming passages. Most significantly, the world was introduced to the unique Strokes sound through Julian Casablancas’ grimy and compressed sounding vocals. This album received a killer reception worldwide, as people breathed out a collective sigh of relief at finally hearing something fresh, funky and fun.
